Magical Myths: Our Storytelling Adventure with Matthew Bellwood!

What a spectacular day we had in Year 3 on Tuesday! The classroom was transformed into a land of ancient legends as we welcomed the brilliant storyteller, Matthew Bellwood, for a special workshop all about the epic hero, Lemminkäinen.

The children didn’t just listen to the story—they lived it! We kicked off the morning by learning traditional songs. The room was filled with rhythmic chanting and singing as we used our voices to set the scene of the snowy North. It was the perfect way to get into character! Matthew then led the children in acting out the key moments of Lemminkäinen’s journey. The highlight of the afternoon was definitely our shadow puppet theater. Using light, screens, and carefully cut-out silhouettes, the children re-told the story of Lemminkäinen. The children worked in small groups to narrate their scenes, showing fantastic teamwork and creative flair.

Ukulele Fun…

We thoroughly enjoyed our music lesson today where Adam from Front Row Music introduced us to playing the ukulele.

We began by learning the different parts of the ukulele: head, neck, body, sound hole and strings.

With a little bit of practise, we played in time together, getting to know the four strings. We then played different chords.

We definitely have some budding musicians in 3BC!

ACE Historians – Our day at Murton Park…

What a fantastic day we had at Murton Park! As soon as we arrived, we were transported back in time to The Stone Age. We spent the day in role, wearing our tunics in the village. ‘Raven’ was our tribe leader for the day and we began by being given our jobs to complete.

Raven was very impressed with what we already knew about life during the Stone and Bronze Ages!

Throughout the day, we worked collaboratively to complete the tasks which included: grinding wheat, making ‘Bell Beaker’ pottery, hunting and weaving.

We enjoyed listening to a story around the fire in the roundhouse to end the wonderful day.

Anti-Bullying Week

3BC had a fantastic Anti-Bullying Week! We kicked off the week by wearing our odd socks to stand up against bullying.

We went on to create our own music video, inspired by Andy and the Odd Socks with the help of Jenny from the Big Foot Theatre Company.

We received some great entries for the ‘Design an Upstander’ competition, and we are now ready to use our ‘power for good’ to put an end to bullying!

Celebrating Black History…

We have spent time this week reflecting on inspiring individuals and their amazing achievements from our prior learning including Mae Jemison and Mary Seacole. In our reading lessons, we were introduced to other significant individuals including Rosa Parks, a very brave and determined activist and Guion Bluford, the first African American to go into space.

We discussed why ‘Black History Month’ is celebrated – to share, celebrate and understand the impact of black heritage and culture and that in the past, the achievements of many individuals has been overlooked or distorted.

We enjoyed researching other individuals and then sharing interesting facts about them and their incredible achievements with each other…

We love books!

This week, we visited Moor Allerton Library to learn about the different types of books that we could borrow for free. We asked the local librarian questions and got a chance to read and explore new stories and information books. We love reading in 3BC!

PSHE: What are boundaries and why do we need them?

This week in PSHE, we have been learning about boundaries. Boundaries are limits that help us understand what is acceptable behaviour and what is not, both for ourselves and for others. We role-played as a class this week, focusing on how to set positive boundaries when dealing with bullying. We want to take action and be empowered to be upstanders. We also listened to an extremely catchy song—take a listen!

The Big Question

3BC has been thinking about our big question this half term: ‘What links can you make between the Stone Age and now?’ We have been using our enquiring minds to think about similarities, differences, and how we connect our learning together.

‘Making links means when you already know something and you can add to it to make it bigger and better. There was three periods in the stone age, Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic. They used tools to catch animals but we used tool to build things. They used flint. Flint is sedimentary rock just like in the chalk pit in ‘Stig of the dump’ Sofia

‘Make links means making ideas. Thinking of something that links to something you already know. We still make houses out of wood like in the stone age.’ Amen

Making links means thinking about something that you already know about. I pick out an idea so then I can remember what information I have… I am good at making links because I watch archaeologists on TV and use this in lessons.  Stone age people communicate by cave drawing. We still do this but with paper.’ William
